IWC Pilot's Watches

IWC Pilot's Watches in brief

IWC's pilot's watches began in 1936 with its first dedicated pilot's watch. The large observation watch of 1940 and the Mark 11 of 1948, with a legible black dial and an inner case protecting against magnetic fields, wrote the rules of the modern pilot's watch.

The language of today's family is still the same: a black or blue dial, large luminous numerals, a triangle marker at 12 o'clock. From the plain Mark series models to the large-crowned Big Pilot and the ceramic Top Gun chronographs, it is a broad family.

Common references and sizes

The Mark XX 40 mm, Pilot's Watch Chronograph 41 and 43 mm, Big Pilot 43 and 46.2 mm, and Top Gun ceramic models around 41 and 44 mm are commonly seen.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Big Pilot look large?

The 46 mm Big Pilot is very noticeable; for a more compact choice, the 43 mm Big Pilot or the 40 mm Mark XX is preferred.

What is Top Gun?

IWC's series of pilot's watches named after the US Navy's pilot school, mostly with ceramic cases and matte colors.

Why does magnetic protection matter?

Magnets such as phones, speakers and bag clasps can affect a mechanical watch; the inner case reduces this effect.
